The Peterboat
Tucked away along the scenic Leigh-on-Sea coast, The Peterboat isn’t just a pub-it’s a local institution that blends sea breeze vibes with satisfying British classics. The moment you spot its iconic location on 27 High St, Southend-on-Sea, the atmosphere instantly shifts into relaxed seaside mode. This place radiates old-school charm with a splash of contemporary comfort, and the views across the estuary? Absolutely unbeatable, especially if you grab a spot in their outdoor seating area on a sunny afternoon.
Let’s talk food-because that’s what keeps people coming back. The Fish and Chips here are what you’d call textbook perfect: golden batter, flaky fish, and a generous side of chunky chips. But what really sets The Peterboat apart is the Peterboat Cockle Chowder. Rich, creamy, and brimming with local seafood flavor, it’s got that nostalgic, homemade feel that reminds you of coastal holidays. Pair it with a chilled pint of Heineken or one of their craft ciders, and you’ve got the ultimate comfort combo.
Craving something starter-sized? The Whitebait and Prawn Cocktail make excellent opening acts. They're fresh, crisp, and plated with care. If you're the type to order a table full of small plates and graze, you're in good hands here. The Chicken Wings and Onion Rings hit the spot, and for veggie lovers, the Battered Halloumi and Cauliflower Cheese are surprisingly hearty.
One of the things I love most about The Peterboat is its flexibility. It’s great for casual solo dining-you won’t feel out of place grabbing a Tuna Melt and sipping tea while reading a book-but it also works beautifully for big weekend catchups. Sundays, especially, have a real community vibe. Families, couples, and friend groups all gathering for a bite of classic pub fare or perhaps something sweet-like their indulgent Profiteroles or a slice of their weekly featured cake.
Now, if you’re someone who likes your food with a side of live music, this spot checks that box too. The regular live music events bring an extra buzz, especially in the evenings. Whether it's soft acoustic melodies or upbeat local bands, the entertainment feels curated to match the relaxed-yet-lively mood of the venue. Combine that with a solid wine list and top-tier coffee, and you’ve got a full sensory experience.
Accessibility is another major plus. The Peterboat features a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, seating, and toilet, making it welcoming for everyone. That kind of thoughtfulness speaks volumes about their commitment to comfort-not just through the food and drinks, but in how they design the whole dining experience.
When it comes to drinks, the bar doesn’t disappoint. Alongside popular choices like Heineken and a rotating cast of ciders, you’ll find a well-stocked selection of spirits, cocktails, and wines. Their tea selection is surprisingly good too-ideal for a calm midday break by the sea.
Health-conscious diners will appreciate that The Peterboat offers vegan and vegetarian dishes, along with small plates and healthy options, so you're not locked into heavy pub fare unless that’s what you’re craving.
There’s no delivery here, and frankly, that’s part of the charm. This is a place best enjoyed in person-whether you’re sitting by the window watching the tide come in, or lounging outside under the sun with a half-pint in hand.
For anyone who appreciates good food with character, seaside views, and a setting that feels both familiar and special, The Peterboat strikes the perfect balance.

Arh The Peterboat, aways ceases to amaze! I haven't been in a while, and the place just gets better and better. The quality of services was just 5 stars. From when we arrived at front of desk, to being seated, to being told who our drinks will be ordered with, followed by our lovely waitress Angela, who took our food orders. Not only was Angela impressive, with her knowledge, she went that extra mile to accommodate us. She also made sure that all the tables around her were accommodated. When people left, she quickly and efficiently reset the tables for the next customers. The service was unbelievably quick, and food was very nice. Half chicken with mash and seasonal veg extremely good. There must of easily been two hundred people there on our visit today for the few hours we was there, the atmosphere was lovely. Well done, Peter Boat, your staff are absolute credit to you, you should be very proud of them....and thank you.
Had a lovely meal and time at the Peter Boat, food was delicious and plenty of it, service was spot on and amazing views of the Sea. Highly recommend when ever your in Old Leigh.
Fantastic venue to enjoy evening cocktails. I enjoyed my fish and chips. Frankly, it was by far the best fish in batter I have had. Crisp and not soaked in oil. The skate could have less batter. Definitely recommend.
I really liked the atmosphere of this place. We were at a table outside, which was even better. The waiter who served us was very clever and kind. This place is definitely suitable for those who love romantic evenings by the sea. Also, despite the full board, the staff did their job great. By the way, you can also bring dogs here
The portions here are humungous! My steak and ale pie was okay, chips were very well cooked. Although, unfortunately , the beef burger wasn’t cooked well and did not taste good. Our starters were decent too. Overall, the food was okay.
